Supermodel extraordinaire Kate Moss and openly transsexual model Lea T are gracing the cover of Love, an ultra chic, cutting-edge fashion magazine.  Published twice yearly, Love is known for its extreme covers, always displayed with the “Whose Who” of iconic legends, and this February’s issue is no exception. Despite all the negative attention the fashion industry has received over the years, I like the direction it has evolved. Gone are the traditional “girl next door” beauties of 80’s past.  The industry has gone against grain of society’s standards and has grown beyond the realms of what we were brought up to deem as “pretty.” The tomboy’s masculine features that made her the brunt of high school jokes are now considered “angular” and add certain hard edge that to Haute Couture.  The slouchy girl whose awkwardness kept her home myriad weekends transforms into art in the glossy pages of Vogue. And finally, the boy who did not feel right in his skin, who spent his childhood in a category he felt he did not belong, is on the cover of one of the fashion world’s most coveted magazines, playing the role SHE was meant to fill. The media says the fashion industry needs to take a second look at its standards. I say the media needs to take a second look at the fashion industry’s standards.
